China und die Welt

💭🇨🇳🇹🇼 China Take |

The PR China has announced a live-fire military drill around Taiwan, starting on December 29 (titled 'Justice Mission 2025'), which aims to showcase Beijing's ability to encircle and cut off the island from Western support.
It particularly focusses on sea-air combat readiness and the blockade of key ports and areas. According to Shi Yi, spokesperson of the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), the exercise shall be understood as a "stern warning against 'Taiwan Independence' separatist forces and external interference, and a legitimate and necessary action to safeguard China's sovereignty and national unity." The Taiwanese government condemned the drills and mobilised troops.

This considerable Chinese military exercise can also be understood as a reaction to the announcement of the United States to sell Taiwan a weapons package worth $ 11.1bn and the alleged interoperability between US and Taiwanese combat systems. The sale of U.S. weapons raised sharp protest of the PRC which ultimately sanctioned U.S. defence firms.

The ongoing Chinese military exercises around Taiwan (the sixth since the Taiwan visit of former U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in 2022) are continuously blurring the line between mere routine military drills and a forceful attack on Taiwan.
